Lafayette was born about 1837, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Samuel Moon and Sarah Beighley (spelling varies). The family, including his older brother John W., and younger sisters, Emaline and Lucy Ann, moved to Sylvan, Richland, Wisconsin about 1855, where his father died about 1856. His mother remarried to Mr. Asahel Savage about 1860.
Lafayette married Martha M. Dean 12 Feb 1860, and he purchased some land in Sylvan in January 1861. He enlisted in the war 23 Sep 1861. The year after he died, the area of Richland and Vernon counties, Wisconsin had a tornado (Jun 1865). Martha was with her parents, and she and her mother perished in the tornado. Her father, a doctor, was injured.

"The Battle of Bald Hill in the siege of Atlanta, GA, took the life of Lafayette Moon and his brother-in-law Thomas Dean. Brother-in-law William Henry Murray died at the Battle of Bolton Station, Mississippi, 04 Feb 1864, 6 months prior to Lafayette's death. After the war was over William's widow, Louisa Sutherland (and son John) married Lafayette's older brother John W. Moon. (24 Sep 1865) also a Veteran of Co I, 12th Wisconsin Infantry."
