He formerly lived in LaHarpe and graduated from the LaHarpe high school with the class of 1935. Loren Flack Is "Missing"
Former LaHarpe Boy Was On USS Helena Sunk In Kula Gulf
Loren W. Flack, formerly of LaHarpe, is officially listed as missing in action following the sinking of the U. S. S. Helena in Kula Gulf on July 6, according to a message received by his mother, Mrs. Lula Mathews, Elsmore. He was a first class seaman.
Seaman Flack graduated from the LaHarpe high school in 1935 and had spent his entire life in Allen county until he joined the navy several years ago.
He served on the cruiser Chicago and saw action in the battles fought in Magassar Strait and the Coral Sea and also in the American landing on Guadalcanal. He was on the Chicago when it was sunk in January. Flack, probably, has taken part in more naval engagements than any other man from Allen county.
Mrs. John Stuteville, 213 North Walnut, Iola, is his sister. He also has a brother, Marvin Flack, living in San Francisco. Last November Seaman Flack visited his mother and sister.
