Enlisted in Company F, at Callicoon, New York, 143rd Infantry Regiment October 8, 1862. He was 29 years old. Mustered in as private on October 8, 1862. Killed in action on July 20, 1864, at Peach Tree Creek, Georgia. (Name also borne as Hanschen.)

Originally buried at Peach Tree Creek battlefield. Five men of the 143rd New York were killed in the incident: Corpl Dibble, Henschen, Vansicklen, Everden and Sergt Amos P. Akins.
