John Baxter was an American Soldier during the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865.

He enlisted on August 20th, 1863, at New York City, New York, for three years service at the age of 21 and was mustered into service as a Private in Company F of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 13th, 1863, at New York City, New York. He served with the regiment through its service in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.

He was wounded in action on August 27th, 1864, at Chattahoochee River Bridge, Georgia, and taken to the field hospital of the 2nd Division, 20th Army Corps, where he died later that day.
