John was born about 1535 in Penton-Grafton, Parish of Weyhill, County Hampshire, England. The parish records do not begin until the year 1564, and the name of Bent is found on the first page. John's wife was named Edith, but her parentage is unknown. They were married about 1564 in Calne, County Wiltshire. John and Edith had ten known children, all born in Penton-Grafton. John must have been a fairly successful farmer, or "yeoman", because his estate was substantial for the times. At Winchester, less than twenty miles away, are Bent wills dating back to 1519, among them an Edward Bent in 1558, John's father. John Bent died in Penton-Grafton, in 1588, in the 30th year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth, leaving a widow Edith. John wrote his will on June 19, 1588 and it was filed at the Consistory Court at Winchester, Hampshire. The will was proved on September 18th of the same year in Winton, Hampshire. He must have been buried in the churchyard of Saint Michael and All Angels Church in Weyhill.
