Frances Baker was born about 1810 in Germany. On various documents through the years, her birthplace has been listed as Bavaria in some, Germany in others. Frances was the daughter of Frederick and Mary Magdalen Baker, both born in Germany. The Baker family arrived in the United States on Aug 1, 1831, on the Brig Mercure from LeHavre, France, arriving at the port in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Frances was the oldest child in the family and had five sisters and two brothers, all born in Germany. The five sisters were: J. Baker (ca 1812-), M. Baker (ca 1814-), Marissa Baker (ca 1816-), Jean Baker (1818-), and Magdalen Baker (ca 1823-). Her two brothers were: Joseph Baker (ca 1820-1883) and Andrew Philip Baker (1830-1868).

On Jun 17, 1832, in Loretto, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, Frances married Adam Joseph Hubsch (also spelled Huebsch, and into the second half of the 1800s it was more often spelled Hipps, which was the name their children used). Adam was born ca 1805 in Germany and died 29 Jun 1860 in Cambria County, Pennsylvania.

This couple was living in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania in 1840 but moved and settled into a life of farming in Cambria County, Pennsylvania.

Adam and Frances had 8 known children:
Mary A. Hipps-Woodley (1832-1895),
John Hipps (ca 1834-),
George Hipps (ca 1835-1863),
Catherine Frances Hipps-Kirkpatrick (1837-1919),
Joseph Hipps (1844-1911),
Elizabeth Hipps-Flanagan (ca 1846-),
Margaret Hipps-Gray (1847-1937), and
Magdalen Hipps (ca 1849-).

After her husband Adam died, Frances kept farming with six of her children still living with her at home. Also living with her was her widowed mother Mary Baker. The year before Frances died she was living with her daughter Elizabeth Hipps-Flanagan and that family in Chest, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
