NORMAN E. KROG
Dr. Norman Eiler Krog, 72, of 3826 Stone Road, Middleport, NY died unexpectedly Dec. 24 in Tucson, AZ.
He was born Jan. 29, 1917, in Lincoln County, Lake Benton, MN, the eldest son of the late Johan and Hanne Krog.
He attended rural District 16 and graduated from WCSA, Morris. He served in the United Sates Army for five years as a Battery Reconnaissance Officer in the Field Artillery. He participated in the second wave of the Normandy landing and served in the European Theater until the end of the war. He flew 135 reconnaissance missions over enemy territory. He received the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, EAME (European, African and Middle Eastern campaign) Ribbon with five Bronze Stars, and Arrowhead American Defense Ribbon. He was discharged with rank of Captain.
Dr. Krog earned his PhD in plan physiology at the University of Minnesota in 1952. He was employed by FMC Corp. in Middleport for 30 years in the research and development program as a research scientist and manager working on crop protection chemicals until his retirement. He played a significant role in the development of Furadan and was a highly respected agricultural scientist throughout the United States. He was the inventor on several issued patents and the author of many scientific publications.
Dr. Krog served for 14 years on the Board of Royalton-Hartland Central School and was president for five years. An avid bird watcher and environmentalist all his life, he was appointed to serve on the Environmental Management Council for Niagara County. He was also an active member of Witness for Peace, People of Shalom, the National Audubon Society and the North American Bluebird Society. Dr. Krog was confirmed at Diamond Lake Danish Lutheran Church and at his death was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Medina NY.
He married Helen M. Davis of Barneveld, WI in 1948, who survive. Also surviving are their four children, Celeste Morien of Medina; Kimberley of Quito, Ecuador; Bronwyn of Toronto and Hazlitt of Armonk, NY; four grandchildren; three brothers, Arnold, Howard and Leon Krog of Lake Benton.
A Memorial service for family and friends was held at the First Presbyterian Church, Dec. 29, 1989 at 7 p.m. A memorial service and interment will be held at Diamond Lake Church and cemetery, Lake Benton, at a later time.
