David Anderson, 80, lifelong Concord resident, died Saturday, June 2, 2007 at his Concord home. He was the husband of Charlotte M. (Lehto) Anderson.
Born in Concord on May 7, 1927 he was the son of the late Leslie O. and Ester Howe (Wheeler) Anderson. As a young Concord lad, he attended Fenn School and worked on the family owned Wheeler farm on Fitchburg Turnpike at Nine Acre Corner in Concord. He attended Concord Public Schools and graduated from Concord High School in 1945. Just prior to graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Navy on his 18th birthday and served during World War II aboard a P.T. Boat in the Philippines.
He followed in the tradition of his father and grandfather as the proprietor of L. Anderson & Son Market and then developed Anderson's Catering located in the family owned building at 42 Main Street on the Milldam in Concord Center. Noted as the purveyors of fine foods including SS Pierce products, hand cut meat, game and fish as well as wine and beer. The front of the store along the sidewalk was always bountiful with fruits, vegetables and flowers making it a landmark in Concord Center. Deliveries and charge accounts were commonplace and the development of his snow plowing business became a natural off shoot to be assured deliveries would be timely in winter weather. His work ethic was one that no one could compete with yet he instilled that same work ethic in his children.
"Andy" Anderson was a star in the stock car racing circuit in the 40's and 50's driving a '39 Ford marked # 6 with a Norwegian flag emblem. He would race throughout New England at Norwood, Westboro and Peabody in Massachusetts and Lonsdale, Rhode Island, Hudson, New Hampshire and Thompson, Connecticut. He was passionate about racing and at his 80th birthday celebration was reintroduced to an identical '39 Ford. When friends Steve Brown and Jess Miller started the engine "Andy" was brought to tears overwhelmed by the moment and nuances.
An avid country music fan, he developed lifelong friendships and admirations for people in the country music industry. He especially enjoyed the likes of Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams, George Jones, Patsy Cline, Sleepy LaBeef, Robin Wright and Dave Pike and many others. He wrote several country songs and was often recognized in the audience and was invited on stage to sing with many a country band.
A lifelong Concord resident, he was a member of the Concord Lodge of Elks, Concord Rod and Gun Club and the Musketaquid Club. As a second-generation member of the Musketaquid Club he recounted with pride his father's participation in the construction of the pond there. He enjoyed skeet shooting, fishing and the general camaraderie at the club.
In addition to his wife Charlotte, he is survived by 6 daughters, Janice Anderson Wasmer of Concord, Bonnie Jacobellis of Carlisle, Beverly Greene and her husband David of Stow, Jennifer Floyd and her husband Babi of Sherman, CT, Donna Dahlke and her husband Eric of Mill Valley, CA, and Lori Anderson Henesey of Concord, 1 son, David Anderson and his wife Karen of Littleton, 23 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons. He was also the brother of the late William W. Anderson and Pauline Wilson.
Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home of Concord, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center will be held today, Thursday, June 7th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 8th in the First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord Center at 12 Noon. Officiating will be the Rev. Jennie Rankin.
Private burial will be in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.
