Claire Howard Abbott, 81, of 732 Overman Ave., died at 8:50 p.m. July 8, 2009, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born July 31, 1927, in Coatsville, Mo., to Pearl J. and Ada Hurley Abbott. He married Annalee Beach June 14, 1953. She preceded him in death Jan. 29, 1990.

He served in the Merchant Marines and later served in the Army. A graduate of Northeast Missouri Teachers College, he had been resident of Ottumwa since 1958. He worked for John Deere Ottumwa Works as a power house operator, retiring in 1987.He was a member of Albia Road Baptist Church and Empire Masonic Lodge #269 A.F. and A.M. He enjoyed bowling, Lawrence Welk and traveling.

Surviving are a daughter, Beverley Adams of Wichita, Kan.; a son, Neal (Alicia) Abbott of Ottumwa; four grandchildren, Brian Adams of Kansas, Amy Adams of Florida, Jeffrey (Hannah) Abbott of Florida and Jennifer Abbott of Ottumwa; a sister, Joan (Bob) Broderick of Bettendorf; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Abbott of Lancaster, Mo.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Abbott, and a son-in-law, Stephen Adams.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Kallem officiating.
