Robert S. Ackerman, Berkeley County retired farmer, died yesterday at his residence at the age of 99. Funeral services will take place at the Half-Way Creek Baptist (sic) Church, Berkeley County, at 1 o'clock this afternoon with the Rev. Eugene Hazleton officiating. Burial, directed by Stuhr's, will be in the churchyard.
Mr. Ackerman was a farmer in the Hell Hole section of the county. He had retired some time ago.
Surviving are a brother, Isam Ackerman of Witherbee; two sisters, Mrs. Argent Cumbee of North Charleston, and Mrs. Etta Brown, of Moncks Corner; four sons, Julius, of Honey Hill; Edward, of North Charleston, Ludie, of Charleston, and Lawrence Ackerman of McClellanville; and two daughters, Mrs. John Morris, of McClellanville, and Miss Amelia P. Ackerman, of Michigan.
Halfway Creek Cemetery tombstone:
Ackerman, Robert 10 Feb 1850 - 24 Jan 1949; but 1860 and 1870 censuses suggest he was born 1856.
Married:
1. Portia Ann Morris.
2. Etta Bunch.
Ludie, b. 1898, was a son of Ann Morris. Lawrence, b. 1902, was a son of Etta Bunch. Inaccuracies of birth dates on tombstones, in obituaries, and on death certificates make the exact birth years of some siblings difficult to determine. However, the records appear sufficiently accurate to determine whether each was born before Ludie or after Lawrence.
