Ransom was a son of George and Martha Austin and had several siblings, including Hannah, William H, Ann Martha, Hiram, Mary E, and Calvin. In 1850 they were living in Warren, Ohio, and moved to Sheffield, Ohio, by 1870. He married Martha in 1876 and they had six children. In 1880 they were living in Denmark, Ohio. By 1900 they were living in Richmond, Ohio. They then moved to Andover, Ohio, where they remained.
