Death of Mr. Claude E. White
Leading Citizen and Prominent Merchant Dies Suddenly Here.

Mr. Claude E. White, aged 58, one of Ackerman's most substantial citizens, died suddenly at his home here last Saturday night, shortly after the midnight hour, and his untimely demise caused sadness throughout the borders of Choctaw county.

He seemed to be in his usual health late Saturday afternoon when he went to his home, ate a hearty supper and later retired. About 10 o'clock he awoke violently ill and his family physician, Dr. W. D. Arnold, was hurriedly summoned and administered treatment and for awhile he rallied but a sudden heart attack seized him and his soul passed back to the God that gave it.

Mr. White had been a citizen of Ackerman for the past 20 years or more where he had been engaged in the mercantile business and was still conducting same at the time of his death.

He was a native of this county, having been born at Huntsville and resided there until his father moved to Chester and then later moved to Ackerman where he entered business with his half-brother, the late Mr. J. W. Harmon.

He was a son of the late Mr. Wiley White, former Chancery Clerk of Choctaw county, and served as Deputy Sheriff of the county under the administration of the late W. M. Roberts. He had also served as an official of Ackerman for several terms a number of years ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church and had served in an official capacity for many years and was a trustee of the Church property at the time of his death.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Sunday after noon at 4 o'clock by his pastor, Rev. T. B. Thrower, assisted by Rev. J. R. Tackett and Rev. J. W. Gibson, of Weir. During this service a short talk was made by his intimate friend, Supt. J. R. Brinson, of Kilmichael, who paid a beautiful tribute to the deceased. At the conclusion of the services at the church the remains were conveyed to beautiful Enon Cemetery and there laid away to await His coming who doeth all things well. The attendance at the funeral services was one of the largest gatherings that has occurred here in a long time and the floral wreaths were beautiful and many.

The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Annie B. White and his mother, Mrs. Mary White, besides a large list of other relatives and friends.

Claude White, as he was known to his friends, was the soul of honor. He was an up-right, honorable citizen and had the confidence and respect of his fellowman. No greater compliment can be paid anyone when he has passed from earth to life everlasting than to say that "he left a good name", and so that is true today with our ever cheerful, true hearted friend.

Among the out of town relatives here for the funeral were the following: Mrs. Fannie Roache, Memphis; Sheriff and Mrs. A. W. Sugg, Eupora; Mr. and Mrs. T. Carter Harmon, Meridian; J. William Harmon, Oxford; Mrs. Robert Ivy and son, Sterling, and daughter, Mrs. Walter Davis, Griffith; Mr. and Mrs. Tom D. White and two daughters; Mrs. Barbara Dyer and son, and Miss Loraine White, Huntsville; Miss Beulah Staples, Cedar Bluff; Mr. and Mrs. E. L Shaw, Tie Plant; S. C. Stanley, Grenada; Mr. Lamar Graves and son, Bob White, Sturgis; Mr. and Mrs. Wirt Coleman and daughter, Anita, West Point; Mr. and Mrs. John L. Buck and two children, Miss Christabel and J. L. Jr., West Point; Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Buck, Mr. and Mrs. Ming, Mr. and Mrs. W. H Lavender and children, Weir; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ward, Mrs. Williard Collier and children, of Chester; Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Tabor, Kilmichael; Mrs. Oscar W. Roberts and children Ethel; Mrs. Edward Terry and daughter, Calhoun City, and Mrs. W. C. Buck of Weir.
