Tom Dawe was born in North Skelton, Yorkshire, England where his father was a coal miner. His family had come from Cornwall and a long line of miners. He was the oldest child, but only three of the six born to his parents survived. Two died before age one; the third before age five.
In 1904, Tom's parents emigrated with the three children to North America traveling from Liverpool to Montral, Canada. The family settled in Cobalt, far north Ontario. Tom's father found work as a silver miner, but Tom trained to be a blacksmith. It must not have worked out as he was a miner at the time he married in 1912. He returned to England to get a young woman from Leeds, England to be his bride. They were married in Cobalt, Ontario.
Over the next several years, they had three children, two born in Cobalt, the third in Toronto. Tom had enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Forces during WWI; his wife lived in the large city at that time.
In 1919, Tom's parents, his sister, Tom and his family, immigrated to the US through Detroit. Tom's family settled in the area. His parents eventually migrated to California as did his sister following her marriage. Tom's brother and his family came to Michigan the next year, but he and his wife went to California after 1942.
While still in Detroit, Tom's parents managed an apartment house. Tom and his wife took it over when his parents left. Some of the men worked in the automobile factories.
I remember very little about Grandpa Dawe because he died of heart problems when I was a year old. There were other contributing factors as well. He is buried at Acacia Park Cemetery in Beverly Hills, Michigan.
