Enlisted on 4/17/1861 at Alexandria, VA., he was mustered into Captain Morton's Company "Alexandria Riflemen", 17th Virginia Infantry and was commissioned 7/1/1861 as a 2nd Lieutenant. This Company was redesignated Company A, 17th Virginia Infantry.
Absent, sick July & Aug 1861 Roll in Culpeper County.
Absent, sick Sept & Oct 1861 Roll in Rappahannock County; returned to duty 11/1/1861.
Not reelected Lieutenant 4/26/1862 reorganization.
He was discharged 10/15/1862 for ill health.
On 11/14/1862 he was commissioned as Captain, Assistant Adjutant General for General Corse.
Wounded in leg 5/16/1864 at Drewery's Bluff, VA.
He resigned on 11/4/1864.

The 17th Infantry Regiment was organized at Manassas Junction, Virginia, in June, 1861, using the 6th Battalion Virginia Infantry as its nucleus. Men of this unit were recruited in the counties of Warren, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and Fauquier.
