Michael, the son of Maryetta O. Blanton of Portland OR and Melvin M. Blanton also of Portland OR, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on December 29 1964 in Portland OR. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned for duty with Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On March 5, Company B, attached to the 4th Marines for operation Utah, was assigned to guard a downed helicopter near the Chau Ngai village complex in Song Ha District. The NVA launched a vicious attack on the Marines throughout the night, using automatic weapons, rocket propelled grenades and 60mm mortars. The Marines held their ground until help arrived in the morning with the enemy withdrawn from the battlefield the men gathered their casualties and completed evacuations of the wounded and the dead. One of the casualties was LCpl Blanton who was wounded and evacuated to B Med Battalion in Chu Lai.

On June 11 1966, LCpl Blanton was reassigned to serve with Company D, of the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, and on July 5, while in their ambush position south of Phuoc Hoa hamlet, in Binh Son District of Quang Ngai Province two grenades were thrown at the Marines as well as several rounds of small arms were fired by the VC towards the Marines. LCpl Blanton was killed as a result of shrapnel wounds from a hostile grenade.
