Baker was a Union Civil War veteran. He served in three different regiments using the alias Henry Reed. He was a private in Company G, 146th Illinois Volunteer Infantry; Company C, 13th U.S. Infantry; and Company D, 4th Michigan Cavalry.
This information comes from his Civil War pension record in which he was granted an invalid (disability) pension in 1890.
I am not sure that he served in the Spanish American War as his headstone says. He would have been in his late 50's by then. Mr. Baker lived in the Old Soldier's Home in Roseburg for a least ten years before passing away there in 1920.
