Exine A. Roeder, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and lover of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, went to be with Him on June 24, 2009 while at her home at Capstone Village. A service will be held on Saturday, June 27, at noon at Memory Chapel with visitation prior to service, from 11 until noon. Mr. Bill Thetford, Mr. John Seale, and Mr. Ron Gholston will officiate her celebration of life. Burial will follow in Jasper after a funeral procession to Oak Hill Cemetery. A short graveside prayer service will be held there about 2:30 p.m. She will be buried at the Addison family plot with her beloved parents, Mr. and Mrs. Monroe D. Addison, and her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Gholston.
Survivors include her daughter, Teresa R. Carter (Stanley B.) of Northport; her son, James A. Roeder (Dorothy) of Kathleen, Ga.; her grandchildren, Gary R. Kincaid (Holly), J. Christopher Carter (Teresa), David Addison Carter (fiancée Michelle Lepianka), Britni Anne Roeder, and Jeffrey A. Roeder. Great-grandchildren include, Ethan G. Kincaid, Zachary C. Carter, Matthew J. Carter, and Airman 1st Class Dustin R. Shipman.
Ms. Roeder was born November 7, 1920 in Winfield, Alabama to Monroe D. Addison and Mary Lestie Snow Addison. She graduated from Walker County High School and attended the University of Alabama where she pledged Alpha Phi Sorority. While at the University, she was a Corolla Beauty. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1942. She went on to do graduate studies in social work at Chapel Hill, N.C. She served as a social worker with the Red Cross and worked with returning injured soldiers from World War II. In 1947, she married Lt. Horton Edward Roeder (USMC Naval Academy graduate and later a colonel and veteran of three wars). They had two children, Teresa Ann and James Alan Roeder. During their marriage, they traveled extensively in the United States during his tours of duty. She loved being a wife and mother, often entertaining their many friends. She was actively involved in Scouts, P.T.A., and Officer Wives' Club.
In 1968 she moved back to Alabama while her children pursued degrees at the University of Alabama. She worked as a social worker at Bryce Hospital until her retirement in 1981. During her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, her parents and friends. She traveled several times to Europe with friends and later traveled the entire United States with her children and grandchildren. In her last years, she enjoyed trips to the beach with her family and had just returned from a trip to Orange Beach with her children.
She was a lovely southern lady who always thought of others and was a devoted and self-sacrificing mother and grandmother. She loved playing bridge, reading and was in many local ladies' clubs including QuiVive and Ladies' Bible Study Group. She had been an active member of University Church of Christ since 1968. For her last two years, she enjoyed the services led at Capstone Village by Bill Thetford. Every day she spent time in The Word. Her life was a testament to the love she felt for her family and her Lord. Her heart, body, and soul were truly beautiful.
