U.S. Navy Vice Admiral. Graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1896, he went on to be a distinguished US Naval officer in early aviation. In 1916, he was given command of the Navy gunboat USS Sacramento which he commanded throughout World War I. Serving as a Rear Admiral the director of Naval Aviation in 1919, he converted the US Navy’s first dedicated aircraft carrier the USS Langley and was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. For the remainder of his naval career, he commanded Destroyer Squadron 15, was Director of Naval Communications, commanded the Great Lakes Navy Training Center, the Yangtze China Patrol Battle Division One and served as Commandant of the 13th Washington. In 1937, he retired as a U.S. Navy Vice Admiral. After America’s entrance into World War II, Vice Admiral Craven was recalled to active duty serving as superintendent of the New York Maritime Academy New York, serving until 1946. He died at age 76, in St. Albans, New York.
