Enlisted Aug. 13, 1862.
Mustered Oct. 15, 1862.
Discharged for disability March 31, 1863, St. Louis, Mo.

The 34th Iowa Infantry mustered at Burlington, Iowa. Battles during Pvt Barngrover's enlistment included Chickasaw Bayou, Ark Dec 1862, assault and capture of Ft Hindman, Arkansas Post, Jan 1863.
The 34th was so decimated by disease as well as those KIA ( Only about 400 left of 1081 enlisted by 1864) that it was consolidated with the 38th Iowa and renamed the 34th Consolidated Battalion in 1864.
