Son of Troy Carroll and Evelyn Cornelia Rowell Atkinson. D. J. married Helen Elizabeth Lane on July 10, 1936.

MARION — Mr. David Julius “D. J.” Atkinson Sr., 89, widower of Helen Lane Atkinson, died Sunday, February 4, 2007, in Marion County Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, at the chapel of Smith-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Darrell Floyd officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Atkinson was born March 5, 1917, in Marion County, a son of the late Troy Carroll Atkinson Sr. and the late Evelyn Rowell Atkinson. He was a retired farmer and merchant. Mr. Atkinson was a Rotarian and a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Atkinson are two sons, David J. (Betty) Atkinson Jr. of Lexington and Russell G. (Sandra) Atkinson of Charleston; two daughters, Judy A. (Richard) Hunter of Marietta, Ga., and Janice A. (Richard) Lane of Marion; four sisters, Dorothy A. Hall of Charleston, Miriam A. Donavan of New Jersey; Olive A. Nissen of Marion and Gwen A. McCurdy of Charleston; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.

Mr. Atkinson was predeceased by a brother, Troy Carroll Atkinson Jr.
