Robert Perez Barrera, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday June 18, 2009, at the age of 57. Robert was born Feb. 4, 1952, in Wellington, Texas, to Cesario and Petra Barrera.
Robert grew up in Dimmitt, Texas, and after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he moved to Aztec to work. He met Karen at College Heights Baptist Church. He was employed by San Juan County at the time of his death. Robert was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He loved his wife and family and will be missed by his loved ones and friends.
Robert knew not a stranger.
He was preceded in death by his father, Cesario Barrera; his sister, Maria Diaz; mother-in-law, Robbie Smith; brother-in-law, John "Wade" Smith; and nephew, Ernesto Smith.
Robert leaves behind his wife of 30 years, Karen Barrera of Bloomfield; son, Robert of Hobbs; daughters, Bonnie (Jimmy) and their son, Brandon of Farmington, Sally (Hector) and their kids, Lorena, Naelie and Leland of Port Lavaca, Texas; mother, Petra of Dimmit; father-in-law, Earnest Smith; brothers-in-law, Ernie Smith and Leroy Smith (Debbie) all of Aztec; brothers, Eddie (Charlene), Benny (Emilia) and Emilio (Dora); sisters, Amelia, Elidia (Juan), Mary, Gloria and Adela (Henry) all of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday June 23, at New Haven Baptist Temple, 2016 E. 16th St. in Farmington. The Rev. Burt Blackburn and Dr. Clyde Gilman will officiate.
Graveside services with full military honors will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Robert P. Barrera Jr., Ernie Smith, Leroy Smith, Jesse Smith, Juan Martinez Jr., and Jimmy Harris.
Honorary pallbearers will be Brandon Barrera, Earnest Smith, David Wilkey, James Smith, Thurman Bishop, Bill Moreland, and Juan Castaneda.
A memorial fund has been set up at Citizens Bank to defray the cost of medical and funeral expenses.
Robert is in the care of Alternative Choice Cremation and Funeral Services, 804 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington, (505) 326-3671.
