Son of John A & Susan Ann (Rawlings) Finnell. Fountain married Mary Frances Oliver in 1854. They had four children in the years leading up to the Civil War. Fountain enlisted in the Union army, commanding Co A, 14th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, a unit engaged in scouting duty and in combating Confederate guerillas in eastern Kentucky. He died of typhoid fever in the military hospital at Camp Dennison. Buried in Waldschmidt Cemetery outside the camp. Reinterred in the late 1860s, Oliver family graveyard, Clark County, KY.
