Claus was born in Tornesch, Germany and moved to California in 1928. He was raised in the Escalon area and graduated from Escalon High School.
He married Juanita Joyce White from Oakdale, had 2 sons and settled in Modesto in 1955.
Claus served in World War II as a Radio Operator and Officer in the Merchant Marines. Following his service to his country Claus took a job as a Modesto Police Officer where his nickname "Sandy" stuck. Later achieving the rank of Sergeant and working until retirement after 25+ years of service.
Claus enjoyed fishing and watching football. Claus was known to say "Any day spent fishing God gives you another day in your life." Claus was an avid gardener and grew the finest tomatoes ever and loved to sit on the bench and smoke his pipe.
He was preceded in death by his wife Juanita Joyce White.
Surviving family members are his brother Rudolf Fuhlendorf and his wife Sue, his son Michael (Charlene), son David and grandsons, Ward, Erik and Allan.
Claus belonged to the Stanislaus County Peace Officers Association, Gallups Island Radio Officers Association, American Legion Post 74 Modesto, California and Retired Public Employees Association. He was very active in the Calvary Lutheran Church since 1958.
There will be a viewing at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel, 419 Scenic Drive, Modesto, California on Thursday, July 12, 2012 4-8 pm. Church services will be held at the Calvary Lutheran Church 547 Rose Avenue, Modesto, California at 9:00 am on Friday, July 13, 2012. Following church services there will be a graveside ceremony at Oaklawn Memorial Park, 421 North Sierra Avenue, Oakdale, California.
