Major General Cecil L. Dorten assumed duties as the Commander of Headquarters, Headquarters Company (-) 38th Infantry Division (Mechanized), in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 1, 1996. As, Commander, he is responsible for directing the planning, deployment, organizing, coordination and control of all elements of the 38th Infantry Division.

Major General Dorten began his career as an enlisted soldier for the Unites States Army in 1967. He attended the Infantry Officer Candidate School, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on January 22, 1968. Prior to his current assignment, Major General Dorten served as the Assistant Adjutant General, Headquarters (-) State Area Command and most recently served as the Commanding General of Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 76th Infantry Brigade (Separate), which is one of only fifteen Enhanced Brigades in the Army National Guard.

Major General Cecil L. Dorten, age 55, former Commander of the 38th Infantry Division passed away Thursday, February 17, 2000. General Dorten entered military service in 1967. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant through the Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He entered the Indiana Army National Guard in 1975. In May, 1994, he was appointed as the first Commanding General of the 76th Separate Infantry Brigade. He was later appointed as Division Commander of the 38th Infantry Division in December 1996.
