Hugh, my great-great-uncle, was the third-born of the six children of my great-great-grandparents Hugo and Alice Neiman Wellek. His older siblings were Joe and Alice (my great-grandma), and his younger siblings were Annie, Frank, and George. The family attended St. Vincent's Church, where his father had worked with the horses as his first job after arriving in America. At the age of eight, Hugh lost his father in a horrible accident. The family got along with the help of friends and maternal relatives after that (his father's side of the family was in Germany). Only a few years later, he lost the younger of his two sisters, Annie. Eventually he and his siblings got a stepfather, Adolph Herman, though they retained their father's name.

Hugh married a woman named Cora, and they made their home and raised their family in Latrobe.
