(Obituary - Youngstown Vindicator, Mon., May 24, 1926)
Sharon, PA - John S. Spencer, prominent Sharon business man and widely known resident, died Sunday at five p.m. at Buhl Hospital after a week's illness of a complication of diseases. Mr. Spencer was a former councilman of Sharon, a prominent Mason and had engaged in the grocery business in Sharon for the past 40 years. He was born in Oldham, England, Jan. 5, 1854, and came to the United States in 1870, living in St. Clair PA. After working in the coal mines there he came to Sharon in 1877 and engaged in the grocery business with his uncle. Ten years later he was forced to move to Cumberland Co. Tennessee due to ill health and he remained there until 1898 when he returned to Sharon and opened a grocery store. Mr. Spencer was elected to the Sharon Council in 1904 and served for 12 years as a member of that body. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and had been a trustee of that church for twenty years. He was a member of Sharon Lodge, No. 250, F & A M and Norman Chapter, No. 244. His wife, Miriam Lowndes Spencer whom he married 50 years ago preceded him in death a year ago. He leaves four daughters and two sons: Mrs. John Fechrist, Cuyahoga Falls; Mrs. D.J. Bastress, Mrs. Claude Elderson, Miss Maude Spencer and Albert and Joseph Spencer in Sharon. Services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the residence, 431 Irvine St. by Rev. C.G. Fact. Oakwood Cemetery will be the place of interment.
