About 1962 the family moved to California, where he worked in heavy construction, and primarily on the Oroville and Bullards-Bar dams in the state's north-central mountains. They moved back to Oklahoma about 1968 and then managed the Derby Station. After his health started failing, Nella and he decided to apply to the Army Corp of Engineers to work as gate keepers on the lakes. They did this for a few years and he was really in what you call "hog heaven". His favorite pass time was fishing and making friends, which this job did both for him.
