Robert A. Smithers, 85, Potato Street, died Saturday at his home.

Mr. Smithers was a dietary cook for St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, Ogdensburg, retiring in 1978. He had lived at Brier Hill since 1974.

Born June 6, 1921, in DePeyster, son of Archie and Harriette Fleetham Smithers , he graduated in 1939 from Heuvelton Central School.

He enlisted in the Army during World War II.

He married Eleanor Chrysler on Oct. 18, 1947, in the Methodist parsonage at DePeyster. The couple operated a farm at DePeyster until moving in 1952 to Ogdensburg. Mrs. Smithers died June 24, 1969.

Mr. Smithers was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Ogdensburg, and a committeeman for St. John's Holmes Advancement Award and was active in the church choir. He also was a Scoutmaster for 23 years and, in earlier years, competed in show horse and equestrian events, winning many awards throughout Northern New York and Canada.

Surviving are a son, a nephew and two nieces.

A sister, Illeane Ames Smithers , died May 20, 1998.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Foxwood Memorial Park Chapel, Ogdensburg, with Michael Logan, deacon of St. John's Episcopal Church, officiating. Entombment will follow in Foxwood Memorial Park.
