Mrs. W. H. Avise Passes Away
Mrs. W. H. Avise, who has been sick for some time at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. S. Hecker, east of town, passed away Tuesday evening. She was 82 years of age and leaves a husband, four sons and three daughters and several grandchildren.
The funeral will be held from the Hecker home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.

Mrs. Avise Has Answered the Call
In the passing of Mrs. William H. Avise, another well known lady has gone from our midst. She was moved and respected by young and old for her quiet unassuming manner. She was a member of the order of Eastern Star and had many friends in the community. She was a life long member of the Methodist Episcopal church and lived a faithful Christian life. Her death came Tuesday evening June 7th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. S. Hecker, after an illness of only seventeen days. When her condition became critical the sons whose homes are elsewhere were summoned and all the children were with her during her last illness.
The funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon from the Hecker home by Rev. F. T. Stevenson, pastor of the M.E. church, of which she has been a member since her nineteenth year. The casket was carried by six grand sons; Fred and William Avise of Des Moines, Wayne Avise, Dwight and Avise Hecker, and Lloyd Mason, of Altoona. Bountiful floral tokens attested the regard in which she was held and mutely witnessed also the sympathy her friends feel in her loss.
Julia Cassandra Burr was born at Haddam, Connecticut, November 11, 1888. At the age of six months, she with her parents in a party of sixteen, of which she is the last, came over the mountains in a covered wagon and settled on prairies of Illinois near Durham. Here she grew to womanhood and was united in marriage to William H. Avise, April 23, 1863. To this union were born five sons and three daughters. She with her husband and family moved to Altoona, Iowa March 20, 1890, where they resided on a farm northeast of town until November 1920, when on account of their age they came to live in the home of their daughter Mrs. W.S. Hecker. On April 23, 1913 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, and all the children were present. On June 7, 1821, she passed quickly away, having attained the age 82 years, 6 months, and 26 days. There are left to mourn her death her husband and seven children; Norman N. Avise, of Des Moines, Amisa P. Avise, of Ventura, Dennis E. Avise, of mason City, W. Hunter Avise, Mrs. Marilla Clark, Mrs. Bertha E. Mason, and Mrs. Bertha E. Mason, and Mrs. Julia Burr Hecker, all of Altoona. Twenty-three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one brother and two sisters also share in the loss occasioned by her death. One son John Edward having preceded her to the better land eight years ago.
