Dr. Richard LeWayne "Doc" Camberg, 78, of Patterson, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the Appling Healthcare System in Baxley.
He was born December 27, 1930 in Carlton, OR to the late Clifford Jones and Verna Smith Jones Camberg. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War . He established one of the first sports medicine clincis in Flordia and worked tirelessly to care for injured law enforcement personnel, firefighters and paramedics. He graduated from Oregon State University and the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1962 and began his practice when doctors still made house calls.
He was an Eagle Scout and had numerous awards for decades of community service and volunteered medical services to high school and college athletes.
He moved from Jacksonville, FL to Patterson to raise blueberries and continued his medical career as an ER doctor in the Waycross, Baxley and Alma areas.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Timmons Camberg, Patterson; three daughters, Susanne C. Reed, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Lorilee Worsham and husband Mark, Savannah and Lee Camberg, Tampa, FL; four grandchildren, Jennifer Reed, Ansley Reed, Marshall Worsham and John Michael Worsham and one great-grandson, William Peyton Reed.
Visitation will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, June 12, at the funeral home.
A memorial service will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 12, from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick Brown and Amy Chancey officiating.
Interment will follow at a later date at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR.
