Karen Halseth was born Aug. 15, 1942 and grew up in Braham, Minnesota with her younger sister, Judy. Karen moved to California permanently in 1966, and settled in Oceanside in 1973. Karen was a Music Teacher for over 25 years, most of these years for the Oceanside Unified School District. Toward the end of her tenure at OUSD, she was the Chorus teacher at Lincoln Middle School until she retired in 2003. Music was her passion, which she expressed through teaching and performing. In recent years, she taught the Children's Choir and was a member of the Bell Choir at First Presbyterian Church in Oceanside. Karen touched the many lives of her students, colleagues, family and friends. Karen lost her battle of many years to cancer and passed away Saturday night, June 6th, 2009.

Karen is survived by her oldest daughter, Amy and her husband, David Kendall of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and her youngest daughter, Rebecca and her husband, Tom Voris and their children, Kailyn (13), Christian (7), and Kyah (5) of Oceanside. Karen will be missed so much by the people close to her that loved her. She could always be counted on by her family and friends. She was an independent woman that could do anything on her own. She loved to travel and was a dedicated member of many choruses. Karen was a loving person, devoted mother and caring grandmother. Her grandchildren knew her as "Nana." She will always be remembered in our hearts.

A celebration in honor of Karen will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 20th at the Oceanside Museum of Art. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oceanside Museum of Art or the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus.
