ADAMS, O. F.

Macon City, Georgia - O. F. ADAMS, Treasurer of Macon City, was born in Twiggs County, Ga., November 24, 1826. His parents were Daniel and Elizabeth (Ellis) Adams—the former born November 23, 1801, in Rowan County, N. C., and died in Houston County, Ga., in the seventy-ninth year of his age. He was a successful farmer, and considered one of the best in the country. When war broke out he was worth $70,000, which he had made by hard labor in agricultural pursuits. Our subject attended Mercer College in 1846, and in August of that year he left Sophomore half advanced and taught school one year. In this vocation he succeeded well, and left it to the regret of all his patrons. He married December 8, 1847, Miss Julia A., daughter of David and Martha (Mitchell) Flanders, of Bibb County, Ga. David Flanders was from Norwich, Conn., and came to Macon in the winter of 1818, he being one of the early settlers of East Macon. He died in Macon, January 7, 1885, at the advanced age of eighty-six years. His wife, Martha Flanders, died in 1863, at the age of fifty-three years. They had two children, David Mitchell and Julia A., the latter born July 31, 1830, and died August 26, 1856. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Adams are—Walter F., Ida Gertrude, Lulie E., Oscar M. (who died August 19, 1887, was R. W. Mail Agent between Macon and Montgomery); Mattie J. and Sydney E. Miss Mattie married Guy S. Hillsman, of Madison, Georgia, January 1, 1885. Walter married Miss Mollie C. Crosland, daughter of J. E. Crosland, of Dougherty County, Ga. Ida G. married John J. Smith, July 8, 1875. They live in Indianapolis, Ind. Our subject was first elected alderman December 13, 1852, which position he held one year. During the war he held the same office for the years 1864 and 1865. Before the war he was bookkeeper for Lightfoot & Flanders. In the year 1873 he was appointed by the Council assessor and collector of taxes for the city. Subsequently he was elected chief of police for three consecutive terms. When he had served five years, he was elected city treasurer, which office he still holds. He is a Knight Templar and has been recorder in St. Omer’s Commandery, Macon, Ga., for nine years consecutively. He is treasurer of Goodyear Lodge, No. 60, Order of Tonti, in Macon. He has been secretary of Castle Macon No. 34, Knights of the Golden Rule, for ten years. He is the grand secretary of the Grand Chapter of Georgia of the Knights of the Order of the Golden Rule. He was elected supreme representative by the Castles of Georgia to represent them in the Supreme Commandery at Cincinnati, O., and subsequently he was elected by the Supreme Commandery as a supreme trustee, which office he now holds. Sydney E. represents his father in bookkeeping as city treasurer, and assistant bookkeeper as supreme treasurer in the Knights of the Golden Rule.
