During the War of 1812, Philip was drafted into Captain Jonathan Wamsley's Company of VA Militia, marched to Richmond VA from Beverly, VA and took a boat to Norfolk, VA. He was stationed at the rear of Camp Fort Barbour, where he was taken ill. His uncle, John Brady, came to him with a paper saying that Philip could leave the service, seek medical help and return. This he did. When he returned, he was informed that the war was over, so he returned home to Lewis County. (according to www.rootsweb.com)
