Son of Thomas & Bridget (Kelcourse) Mitchell, b. near Castlebar in County Mayo Ireland. Immigrated to Canada first, there staying with relatives before going to New York to join the US Army for a 5 year "bounty hitch" to earn a stake for his future in America. His occupation was shown as a Painter at the time of his enlistment.
~ PVT, Co D, 10th US Inf (Reg Army)...Served from 16 Apr 1858 to 16 Apr 1863...Honorable Discharge. He served all his time with Company D at Fort Laramie WY, Fort Kearney NE, Fort Bridger UT, among other posts along the Oregon Trail (Family History noted him as an "Indian Fighter"). Much of his time w/Co D would have been under the command of Capt Barnard E Bee, who resigned his command at FT Laramie in Mar '61 to join the CSA back home in SC! He was made a Brigadier just prior to 1st Bull Run where he was credited with bestowing the name "Stonewall" on Jacksons Brigade, just minutes before he was mortally wounded! Within a month after his time was up, his Co D was ordered east to rejoin the rest of the Regiment, which ended up being pretty well ravaged at Gettysburg in July.
After his discharge, Mike located to St Louis MO where he married Miss Ellen Devereaux in 1863. They next appear as having their first born Thomas J. in (US Occupied) Nashville TN (CSA), in Oct '64, ironically at a time when the Battles of Nashville & Franklin raged nearby! By 1870 they had moved on to Little Rock AR where Mike would live out the remainder of his life. Ellen died in 1878 and was survived by her 6 children. Mike remarried Mary (LN UNK), a much younger woman who divorced him (or just left) not long after they had a son named Edward (1879-1905) together. In L.R. he along with his sons became successful (Mitchell & Sons) Paint Contractors, and worked on many of the city's land-mark buildings, including the impressive St Andrews Cathedral (c. late 1870's)!
He was heavily engaged with the state & local Posts of the Grand Army of the Republic.
