Eliza Speelman, longtime resident, died in Durango Mrs. Eliza Nettie Speelman, longtime resident of Archuleta County, passed away on May 22, 1961, after a brief illness. She was in a Durango hospital at the time of her death. Mrs. Speelman had been a resident of Archuleta County for approximately 65 years, coming here before 1900. She was born in Charlottesville, South Carolina, on March 8, 1885, and came here while still a small child. She was united in marriage to Harry Collins Speelman on November 26, 1903, in Pagosa Springs. Mrs. Speelman was a member of the Mormon Church and was a true Christian. She was known and loved by all of her neighbors and was highly respected in this community. Funeral services were held today at 2 p.m. from the Methodist Church with the Rev. Emmons Ringle officiating. Interment was in Hilltop Cemetery. Mrs. Speelman is survived by her husband, Harry; six children, Mrs. Daisy Hughes of Denver, Elmer of Alamosa, Lyle of Seattle, Wash., Milford of Denver, John of Denver and Mrs. Betty Leonard of Durango; two sisters, Mrs. Sally Gribble of Rye, Mrs. Rose Overhulse of California; three brothers, John Rippy, Beuford Rippy and Jim Rippy, all of California; 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to a host of friends, she also leaves to mourn her passing a number of nieces and nephews.
