James and Fannie Carter Bolen married May 27, 1882, in Carthage Missouri
James A. "Jim" Bolen, an early Joplin resident who served as a Jasper County deputy sheriff and as county recorder, owned the Bolen Lead and Zinc Company. He also served as president of the Zenith Mining Company. In 1879, he moved to Kansas City and founded the Bolen Coal Company. He made a large fortune and was once mentioned as a candidate for mayor.
During the Civil War, James A. Bolen served with the Twenty-first Regiment of Kansas troops, and participated in the engagements at Big Blue and Westport.

PIONEER COAL DEALER IS DEAD.
James A Bolen Came to Kansas City in 1879.
James A Bolen, a pioneer coal dealer of Kansas City and proprietor of the Bolen Coal Company, Second and Delaware streets, died early yesterday morning at his home, the Tanner hotel, 917 Locust street. Mr Bolen been ill a week. He was 74 years old.
Mr Bolen came to Kansas City in 1879 and entered the coal business. In the Civil War he was a member of the Missouri guards and fought in the Battle of Westport. He was an active lodge worker, and was a Mason and an Elk. He was one of the original ten who organized Ararat Shrine, and was also one of the twenty men who bought the building now occupied by the Elks' lodge at Seventh street and Grand avenue and presented it to the lodge for a home.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs Frances Carter Bolen, Tanner hotel; two sons, J G Bolen, 14 East Fifty-seventh street and Carter Bolen, Tanner hotel; three daughters, Mrs Jay Davidson, Lafayette, La; Mrs Earl Hammond, Grove, Ok, and Mrs P C Trower, 3224 East Eighth street.
Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock this afternoon in Stine-McClure's chapel. Burial will be in Union cemetery. The Rev George H combs will have charge of the services.
The active pallbearers will be:
