A funeral Mass for J. Laurence Murray, 95, United Helpers Nursing Home, formerly of 807 Montgomery St., will be said at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral with the Rev. Terry R. LaValley officiating. Burial will be in Foxwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Murray died Thursday at United Helpers Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for the last few years.

He was a U.S. Postal Service employee, retiring in 1966. He joined the postal service on Nov. 16, 1936, as a substitute carrier and was named a regular carrier in 1945.

He was a life member of the Elks Lodge and the Spruce Mountain Hunting Club and enjoyed hunting in his younger years. He also enjoyed gardening and photography.

Born Feb. 15, 1911, in Ogdensburg, son of Louis and Marcia McDonald Murray, he graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1929 and worked at the former Clyde F. Brandy Drug Store in his early working years. He joined the Navy in 1944 to serve during World War II.

He married Frances E. Young on March 30, 1932, at St. Mary's Cathedral with the Rev. L.D. Berube officiating. Mrs. Murray died Dec. 16, 2003.

Surviving are a daughter and her husband, a son and his wife, a sister, two half sisters, 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Three sisters, Virginia Murray, Helene Ciszewski and Rita Lahey; and three brothers, Raymond, Jean and Edgar Murray, died before him.
