Nathaniel Bowen was born in Boston, son of the Rev. Penuel Bowen. The family moved to South Carolina when Nathaniel was young and his father died soon after. Nathaniel was raised by the Rev. Robert Smith, who became first bishop of South Carolina. Bowen was married in 1805 to Margaret Blake and they had 10 children, only four of whom survived him.
Bowen graduated from the College of Charleston in 1794; was ordained deacon in 1800 and priest in 1802. He served as rector of St. John's Church, Providence, Rhode Island, St. Michael's Church, Charleston, South Carolina and Grace Church, New York City. In 1814 he received a doctor of divinity from the University of Pennsylvania. He was consecrated bishop of South Carolina on October 8, 1818, serving until his death in Charleston on August 25, 1839.

Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church of South Carolina. He was ordained in 1802, and continued pastor of St. Michael's Church in Charleston till 1812, when he removed to New York; and in 1818, he succeeded Bishop Dehon in the diocese of South Carolina. "This excellent divine," says the Charleston Patriot, "was an example of those winning manners and amiable virtues, that, more than in any other human calling, diffuse over the high function of reforming and instructing men a sweet and mellow lustre; while they are not less effective for beneficent ends and general utility in all the offices of piety, from the least to the most important. In this case they were set off by a simplicity of character, which, harmonizing with what approached as nearly as possible to apostolic influence and authority, placed all classes of men on the same generous and even affectionate level. It must be mentioned as one of the shining ornaments of the Bishop's character, that he was an example of the most extended toleration, being as free from any taint of bigotry, as he was largely imbued with the benevolent affections in their largest exercise. An extensive knowledge of mankind enabled him at all times to temper, with the sweet spirit of charity and the liberal indulgence of a wise experience, all severity of reproof and harshness of conclusion towards the imperfections of
humanity."

1779-1839.—RIGHT REV. NATHANIEL BOWEN, D. D.—The Right Reverent Nathaniel Bowen, D. D., born in Boston 29th June, 1779, consecrated Bishop 8th October, 1818, died 25th August, 1839. Revered in his Diocese for gravity and wisdom ; he was endeared to his congregation by benevolence and piety. This Church, which was edified by his pastoral care, and saw him adorn the episcopal office with dignity ; now dedicates this marble to the memory of his virtues.

On a slab in the floor of the Chancel is inscribed: Here rest the remains of the Right Reverend Nathaniel Bowen, D. D., late Rector of this Church and Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina. He was born in Boston 29th June, 1779, and departed this life 25th August, 1839, in the 61st year of his age.
