WENATCHEE - Bertha B. Sparks, 94, a 74-year Wenatchee resident, died Friday, Dec. 23, 1994, in Central Washington Hospital.

She was born March 10, 1900, to Marshall and Anna (Benedict) McLean at Mold, Wash., about 13 miles north of Coulee City. She was raised and received her education at Mold.

She married Robert Oliver Sparks on Feb. 23, 1918, at Davenport. They made their first home at Mold.

They moved to Wenatchee in 1920. Mrs. Sparks worked as an apple sorter for various packing sheds in the Wenatchee Valley. They bought a ranch at the mouth of No. 2 Canyon in the early 1930s and raised cattle, hogs, fruit and dryland crops.

Mrs. Sparks worked as a sorter into the early 1950s, most recently for the Heminger Fruit Company.

Mr. Sparks died on March 17, 1958. Mrs. Sparks sold their ranch later that year and moved into Wenatchee. In the fall of 1958 she went to work at the public market, where she made donuts. She retired in 1964 and continued to live in Wenatchee.

She was struck by an automobile in 1973 and following extensive surgery on her leg had to use a crutch.

Mrs. Sparks was a longtime member of the Central Christian Church in Wenatchee. She was a former member of the Swing and Turn Square Dance Club and the Appleland Promenaders Square Dance Club.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Vern and Betty Sparks of Wenatchee; four grandsons, Garry Sparks, Jay Sparks and Jeff Sparks, all of Wenatchee, and Jerry Sparks of Oroville; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
