The Florence Standard Journal, February 11, 1898Fontaine Armistead, one of the oldest citizens in North Alabama, died at his home four miles south of Tuscumbia, Monday night at 9 p.m., after a brief illness. His remains were interred in the Winston cemetery, Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m., Rev. Henry Kingham conducted the funeral services.Mr. Armistead was born at Culpepper, Virginia in 1800, and while a small boy removed with his parents to Lauderdale County, settling in what is known as the "Armistead Place," six miles northwest of Florence. In December 1839, he married Miss Mary Susan Winston, removing shortly afterward to Franklin, now Colbert County, where he has since resided. To the union twelve children were born, only four of whom survive him, G. W. and H. C. Armistead of Colbert County, Mrs. R. T. Bugg of Winchester, Tennessee, and Mrs. Kate McFarland of Florence. He has one brother surviving, George Armistead, a resident of Arkansas.
