World War II vet, liked to go lobstering
Russell G. Gib Lowell Sr., 85 of South Portland died Feb. 4, 2006 at a local hospital after a long illness.
Mr. Lowell was born in South Portland, a son of Samuel G. and Maude Keene Lowell. He was educated in the South Portland schools and graduated in the Class of 1937.
Gib served during World War II in the United States Army and the United States Air Force.
Before World War II he worked at the South Portland Shipyard. He also worked with his father, Sam Lowell in the family business, Lowell and Shanks for many years. He retired from the South Portland School System in the Custodial department after 30 years of service.
His hobbies included carpentry, lobstering and crabbing and going to the local islands in Casco Bay.
He was predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Shanks and a great-grand daughter, Eva Colvin.
Surviving are three sons, Bruce M. Lowell of Portland, Russell G. Lowell Jr. and Douglas G. Lowell both of South Portland; two daughters, Lynne M. Downs of South Portland, and Joan E. Lowell of Portland; a sister, Mrs. Shirley Down of Westbrook; his special lady friend, Dorothy Gildard of South Portland; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were by Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland with spring interment planned at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
