Born Anna-Maja Lydia Bengtsson (sometimes known as Andersson), third of six children born to Anders Bengtsson and Britta Cathrina Cajsa Jansdotter in Dannamora, Osthammar, Uppsala, Sweden. Married Carl August Johnson Mar 26, 1882 one month before immigrating to America by way of Duluth, MN, when she Americanized her name to Anna Maria.

Anna Maria and Carl settled on a farm in Lake Bronson, Kittson, Minnesota. Two of Anna Maria's sisters and one brother had also settled in the same area.

Carl and Anna Maria had eight children.

Anna Maria is buried in the Johnson/Johansson Family Cemetery (Kittson County, MN) along with her husband and three of their children.
