During the Civil War Billy served with his father Edward in Company D of the 9th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, which was organized in Bradley County. Billy enlisted at Pine Bluff on July 25, 1861. Billy and Edward fought in the Battle of Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862), by far the bloodiest battle in American history up to that time. Both men saw action in the Hornet's Nest, scene of the battle's fiercest fighting.

Billy also participated in the battle and siege of Vicksburg (May-July 1863). Vicksburg's surrender on July 4 was one of the turning points of the war, as the Union thus gained full control of the Mississippi River, dividing the Confederacy in half.

Billy was paroled on July 8.
