William Timms was born in the Parish of Broom, Bidford. Warwickshire. England on October 12, 1821 son of John Timms and Alice Smith.e youngest of four children. He was about 14 years old when his mother died in 1835. Since William's father was a carpenter. this was the trade which William entered. He worked with his father until he was sixteen years old. On July 4. 1837 William was apprenticed as a carpenter. When his apprenticeship was over he went to visit his sister at Cladswell and she told him that she had invited Mary Ann Avery over and that he was to be there to meet her. William and Mary Ann must have gotten along from the very beginning because they were married on July 15. 1843. They moved to Harrington where he was baptized on February 16, 1845. They started their family on May 13. 1845 when their first child. a son, William John Avery was born. Seven children of the nine children born to them lived to adulthood. William wanted to share the gospel with others and preached in the Market Square at Evesham, Worcester and at several villages. During these times they also entertained such well known missionaries as President John Taylor. Erastus Snow, Moses Thatcher and others. He also met Elder Pratt and John Taylor, two of the twelve, who came to England. William and Mary Ann wanted to leave England and go to Zion and that William would go first, since they did not have enough money to go all at once. He said he would go first. It was a very rough trip across the ocean. The Saints gathered together, loaded wagons with the supplies that they had purchased, and the little things they had brought from home and started across the plains. The roads were good at the beginning of their trip, but the farther they went the worse the roads became. William and Mary Ann's daughter, Hannah, had married John Devey on June 20, 1868 on the ship Emerald Isle which took them across the ocean. The first of the their children to leave England. One by one they came to America: Alice, age 20 and Annie, age 10, sailed on July 28, 1869 on the ship Colorado. William and John sailed aboard the Nevada ship on July 26, 1871. They crossed the plains in the Lott Smith Company. Avery was 11 years old when he sailed October 16, 1871 on the Minnesota, with his sister Hannah's brother-in-law, William Henry Devey, who was his same age. Mary Ann, his wife, and daughter Damarius along with a cousin Tryphena Timms, sailed July 9, 1873 on the ship Nevada. All his children and his wife were in the Salt Lake Valley by 1873. William built a home for his family in Salt Lake City, on the northeast bench at ____Street and Third Avenue. They lived there for the rest of their life. His wife, Mary Ann, died when she was 67 years old. William was 83 years old when he died on October 24, 1904 and is buried beside his wife at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
