JOE BITTENBENDER - Services for long-time Franklin County carpenter Joe Bittenbender, 80, rural Ottawa, were Saturday, May 24, at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa. The Rev. Clyde W. Greisen officiated. Burial was in Muncie Cemetery west of Ottawa in the Chippewa community. He died May 21, 1997, at his home. Born May 30, 1916, in Ottawa, he was the son of Harry and Grace (Caleb) Bittenbender. He lived in the county nearly all of his life. Mr. Bittenbender worked for more than 50 years building homes and barns, and also did remodeling and finishwork. On Oct. 1, 1951, he married Margaret M. Lacy at Bartlesville, Okla. She preceded him in death on Dec. 17, 1989. He attended the Pomona Assembly of God (Solid Rock) Church. Survivors include one daughter, Ruby Howland, Raytown, Mo.; one son, Michael Marks, Belleflower, Calif.; one brother,Jack Bittenbender, Pomona; two sisters, Josie Glaze, Spring Hill, and Ruby Reeves, Ottawa; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Sherman Bittenbender and Alfred Bittenbender, and three sisters, Edith Johnston, Cornelia Johnson, and Wanda Mundy. - The Ottawa Herald Times, May 29, 1997, page 10, column 1 and 2.
