Married 2 Nov 1641, RICHARD BELLINGHAM {1634, Boston}, as his 2nd wife in a controversial marriage: "The young gentlewoman was ready to be contracted to a friend of his, who lodged in his house, and by his consent had proceeded so far with her, when on the sudden the governor treated with her, and obtained her for himself. He excused it by the strength of his affection, and that she was not absolutely promised to the other gentleman. Two errors more he committed upon it: 1. That he would not have his contract published where he dwelt, contrary to an order of court. 2. That he married himself contrary to the cxonstant practice of the country." When called to court on this matter, Bellingham refused to step down off the bench, and the court thinking it unfit that he sit in judgment on himself, let the matter rest.
Penelope Pelham was sister of HERBERT PELHAM {1638, Cambridge}, WILLIAM PELHAM {1630, Watertown}, & JOHN PELHAM {1635, Unknown}.
