He married Frances Etna "Fannie" White October 14, 1880 in Milam County, Texas. They had eight children: Lizzie who married Tom McDougal and later Bob Griner, Will, Rosa who died of typhoid fever at age 15, Bessie who married first Carl Terpening and second R. G. Struthers, Fred who married Eva Childers, Ola who married first Hugh Roberts and second Jimmy Grafton, Al who married Stella Reed, and Ruby who married Louis Roberts.

J R served as an Arizona Territorial Ranger in 1904. He was one of only 107 original Rangers. He also served as a Douglas City Police officer and as a deputy sheriff.

He and his family were honored by the present day Arizona Rangers with a special grave marking ceremony on 15 May 2009 to recognize his service to the State.
