On February 20, 1926, he married Eleanor Sheridan in the chancel of the First Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

David E. Burr was a 1903 graduate of Cornell University of Engineering. He was a member of the Military Order of the World Wars and of the Society of Colonial Wars. He was a charter member of the National Sojourners. He was a member of St. John’s Lodge of Masons, the Tower Club of Cornell and the Cornell Alumni Association. He was a veteran of the Spanish American War and World War I. He died at age 89 on Monday, December 22, 1969 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a brief illness. Survivors included his wife, Eleanor Sheridan Burr of 19 Agassiz Street in Cambridge; one sister, Bessie B. Tichenor of Chautauqua, New York; one niece, Mrs. D.W. Randolph and two nephews: David A. and George S. Burr. Funeral services were held in Bigelow Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Interment in the family plot at Oak Hill Cemetery in the District of Columbia. No flowers were requested.
