John Burt was the only son of Ellison Burt and Barbary Allen Keen. Ellison and Barbary had married 20 June 1826 in Amite County, MS, but soon afterward moved to Barnwell District, SC.
John had two sisters, Elizabeth and Isabella older than he. Barbary died before the census, as Ellison and his three children are found there on the 1850 census. They must have left SC soon afterward, as John married Eliza Goleman on 3 October 1855 in Clarke County, MS. They would have 4 children, and then the War came.
John Burt served in Company C., Captain S. H. Terral's Company of the 37th Regiment of the Mississippi Infantry, Confederate States of America. He enlisted March 13, 1862 in Clarke County, MS. His fifth child Elijah Keen was on the way by that time and would be born on
1 Oct 1862 while John was in battle. John was wounded in his left side and lung on May 1864 at the Battle of Resaca, GA . He was captured and taken prisoner of war near Nashville, TN on December 15, 1864 . He was taken to Camp Douglas, Illinois where he remained for about six months until the end of the War when he was discharged June 18, 1865.
He returned to Clarke County, MS and he and Eliza had 4 more children after the War. Two sons Charley, born 1870 and Emmett born 1875, died before reaching adulthood.
John was awarded a Pension for his service in the War Between the States. John and Eliza continued to live out their days at Energy, Clarke County, MS. Eliza died 22 Feb 1917 and John died 4 months later on 18 June 1917.
