Joseph Green was born on 15 Apr 1803 in Ulysses, Tompkins Co, NY, the youngest son of Jehiel (1762-1845) & Esther (Armstrong) (1763-1853) Green. Jehiel was a Revolutionary War vet, who served with the 4th Regt of the Westchester Co, NY Colonial Militia (Colonel Thaddeus Crane’s Regt). In the US Census of 1830, living in Howard, Steuben Co, NY- listed in consecutive order on the census record - were Joseph Green (20-30 years old), Daniel Green (30-40, probably Joseph’s cousin), and Jehiel Green (60-70). In about 1827, Joseph Green was united in marriage with Rosanna (maiden surname unknown), in Steuben Co, NY. To their union were born 7 known children – to wit: (1) Sally (Green) Clark / Webb (1828-between 1880-1883), (2) Ezra Green (1830-1893), (3) William Green (1833-before 1883), (4) Mary Jane (Green) Bailey (1837-1869), (5) Rachel (Green) Caton / Bailey (1839-between 1880-1883), (6) Jehiel Green (1841-1870 or 1872), and (7) Orrin Green (1842-1877). According to Rosanna Green’s obit in 1883, she outlived all her children except son Ezra. Sometime between the births of son Ezra in 1830 and daughter Mary Jane in 1837 (probably in 1833, when his father moved from NY to OH), the Joseph Green family also moved from NY to Medina Co, OH, where Joseph is shown in the US Census of 1840 living in Lafayette Twp, due east of Chatham Twp where his father lived. In the US Census of 1850, Joseph & Rosanna Green, are shown in Chatham Twp, Medina Co, OH with 5 of their 7 children. The eldest of the 7, Sally Green, was married and out on her own, and William was missing and may have already died.

In 1853 according to Rev War Pension File # W 7556 for Jehiel’s widow Esther Green, the Joseph Green family moved onward to Seneca Twp, Lenawee Co, MI. The pension file ends that year with Esther living in Joseph’s household, and Esther presumably died in Seneca Twp. Joseph Green did not purchase land there till 11 Sep 1854, however, when he bought a farm in Sec 36 in Seneca Twp from Richard & Dorcus Whitney, per Lenawee Co Land Records Liber 40 / pp 165 & 166. In the US Census of 1860, the Joseph Green family was living in Seneca Twp, with the 2 youngest sons Jehiel & Orrin still at home. Per his GS, Joseph Green died on 09 Jan 1862. Some sources say that he died in Jackson Co, MI just north of Lenawee, but no death record has yet been found. It is likely that he died on his farm in Seneca Twp, being survived by his wife Rosanna and all his children, with the possible exception of son William.

Joseph Green is buried in Row 9 / Stone 12, in the Old Morenci Cemetery located at the north edge of the village on the east side of M-156. Joseph is flanked on his left (as you face the front side of his GS) by son Jehiel Green Row 9 / Stone 13 (misidentified as Israel Green on the GS), and is flanked on his right by his son Orrin Green Row 9 / Stone 11. The occupant of Row 9 / Stone 14 to the left of Jehiel Green is unidentified, and may be the final resting place of son Ezra Green, as the Green family owned plots 11-14. If that were the case, all 3 sons were Civil War veterans. Interment records for the Old Morenci Cemetery are not known to exist.
